PNPI Explorer Blog – South Dakota
Welcome back to the PNPI Explorer blog series, where we examine higher education data in different states. This week’s spotlight is on South Dakota.
In 2022 in South Dakota, there were 20 institutions serving 37,969 full-time equivalent (FTE) students. Using the Comparison Tool, we can examine the average tuition and fees for out-of-state students for South Dakota institutions with all other states. South Dakota institutions have the second-lowest out-of-state tuition cost at $14.19K, more than $10K less than the national average of $25.06K.
This difference between South Dakota and the rest of the nation is not a new phenomenon. South Dakota institutions have consistently charged nearly $10K less than the national average for out-of-state attendees. This difference peaked in 2021, when the out-of-state tuition and fees in South Dakota were $11.31K less than the national average.
