Welcome back to the PNPI Explorer blog series, where we examine higher education data in different states. This week’s spotlight is on Oklahoma.

In 2021 in Oklahoma, there were 49 institutions serving 140,627 full-time equivalent (FTE) students. Using the Comparison Tool, we can examine the racial identity of undergraduate students at Oklahoma institutions. 6.7% of undergraduate students in Oklahoma identify as American Indian or Alaskan Natives, which is the fourth-highest percentage in the country and is 6.1 percentage points higher than the national average of 0.6%.

Oklahoma institutions also serve a high percentage of American Indian/Alaska Native graduate students. 5.6% of graduate students in Oklahoma identify as American Indian or Native Alaskans, the second highest percentage in the country. Oklahoma’s percentage is a full 5.2 percentage points higher than the national average of 0.4%.
