PNPI Explorer Blog – North Dakota

30 September 2024 In Explorer Blog

Welcome back to the PNPI Explorer blog series, where we examine higher education data in different states. This week’s spotlight is on North Dakota.

In 2021 in North Dakota, there were 20 institutions serving 39,908 full-time equivalent (FTE) students. Using the Comparison Tool, we can compare gender differences in enrollment at North Dakota institutions with other states and the nation as a whole. Across the nation, female enrollment outpaces male enrollment, in some cases by as much as 26 percentage points.  In fact, the national average percentage of female FTE enrollment is 57.1% while the national average percentage of male FTE enrollment is 42.9%. In 2021 in North Dakota, men accounted for 47.5% of FTE enrollment, which was the highest of all states and 4.6 percentage points higher than the national average. This suggests that North Dakota has the most gender-equitable enrollment of all U.S. states.

When we examine institution type, we can see that the difference in enrollment between men and women in North Dakota varies by institution type. Only 16.1% of North Dakotans attending for-profit institutions were men. The percentage of male enrollment was higher at non-profit (38.1%), public 2-year (46.6%), and public 4-year institutions (44.1%). Because North Dakota has only one for-profit institution compared to 19 public or non-profit institutions, the latter categories contribute more heavily to the gender equity on display.
