Welcome back to the PNPI Explorer blog series, where we examine higher education data in different states. This week’s spotlight is on New Mexico.
In 2021 in New Mexico, there were 35 institutions serving 70,720 full-time equivalent (FTE) students. Using the Comparison Tool, we can examine the percentage of Hispanic/Latino full-time equivalent enrollment for New Mexico institutions. These institutions outpace those of any other state, with 48.76% of enrolled students identifying as Hispanic or Latino. That places them 29.68 percentage points above the national average of 19.08%.
Using the Trend Explorer, we can see that New Mexico has long exceeded the national average in percentage of Hispanic/Latino full-time equivalent enrollment. Going back to 2011, New Mexico has consistently outpaced the national average by as much as 30 percentage points, with the largest discrepancy being 30.04 percentage points in 2020.
