Welcome back to the PNPI Explorer blog series, where we examine higher education data in different states. This week’s spotlight is on New Jersey.
In 2021 in New Jersey, there were 84 institutions serving 294,309 full-time equivalent (FTE) students. Using the Comparison Tool, we can examine degree attainment in the state of New Jersey, finding that 7.01% of residents reported that their highest earned degree was an associate’s degree. This falls almost two percentage points below the national average of 8.75% and is higher than only two other states and the District of Columbia.
On the contrary, New Jersey has one of the highest rates of bachelor’s degree attainment. New Jersey has the third best percentage in the country of residents whose highest attained degree is a bachelor’s degree. 25.71% of New Jersey residents reported their highest degree as a bachelor’s degree, 4.4 percentage points higher than the national average of 21.25%.
