PNPI Explorer Blog – Mississippi
Welcome back to the PNPI Explorer blog series, where we examine higher education data in different states. This week’s spotlight is on Mississippi.
In 2021 in Mississippi, there were 33 institutions serving 127,704 full-time equivalent (FTE) students. Using the Enrollment & Access report, we can examine the racial/ethnic composition of the full-time undergraduate and graduate student populations. In both cases, more than one-third of the student body identifies as Black or African American (34.1% and 35.2%, respectively).
Using the Comparison Tool, we can examine how Mississippi compares to other states with respect to Black student enrollment. For full-time undergraduates, Mississippi institutions enroll the largest share of Black students at 34.1%, which is more than three times the national estimate of 10.9%.
