PNPI Explorer Blog – Massachusetts
Welcome back to the PNPI Explorer blog series, where we examine higher education data in different states. This week’s spotlight is on Massachusetts.
In 2021 in Massachusetts, there were 106 institutions serving 390,083 full-time equivalent (FTE) students. Using the College Cost report, we can examine the average cost of attendance for Massachusetts institutions by institutional type. We can see a wide discrepancy, with private non-profit institutions averaging $65.1K for attendance, compared to just $13.2K for public two-year institutions and $24.8K for public four-year institutions.
To determine whether, overall, institutions in Massachusetts have higher costs of attendance than institutions in other states, we can turn to the Comparison Tool. Across all institution types, Massachusetts has an average cost of attendance of $50.1K, making it the second highest cost with only Washington, D.C. institutions being more expensive. The average cost of attendance at Massachusetts institutions is nearly double the national average of $28.2K.
