PNPI Explorer Blog – Maryland

10 June 2024 In Explorer Blog

Welcome back to the PNPI Explorer blog series, where we examine higher education data in different states. This week’s spotlight is on Maryland.

In 2021 in Maryland, there were 50 institutions serving 209,371 full-time equivalent (FTE) students. Using the Enrollment & Access report we can examine the racial/ethnic composition of the full-time undergraduate population at Maryland institutions. We can see that 25% of the full-time undergraduate student body in Maryland identifies as Black or African American.

To determine whether this share of Black or African American enrollment is large relative to other states, we can use the Comparison Tool. The 25% enrolled Black or African American full-time undergraduate population makes Maryland the fourth highest among all states, nearly 15 percentage points higher than the national average.

Maryland is also fourth in total bachelor’s degrees awarded to Black graduates, with 20.6% of all bachelor’s degrees in the state going to Black students. This is nearly 12 percentage points higher than the national average.
