PNPI Explorer Blog – Kentucky
Welcome back to the PNPI Explorer blog series, where we examine higher education data in different states. This week’s spotlight is on Kentucky.
In 2021 in Kentucky, there were 57 institutions serving 185,289 full-time equivalent (FTE) students. Using the Explorer’s Completion & Attainment report, we can examine the types of degrees awarded to resident and non-resident (international) students at Kentucky institutions. While total bachelor’s degrees conferred largely reflect the undergraduate population in Kentucky (with 97.3% being conferred to resident students), a large share of graduate degrees are conferred to non-resident or international students (22.8%).
Using the Comparison Tool, we can identify if non-resident graduate degree rates are higher or lower in other states. Kentucky is the third highest state in terms of graduate degrees conferred to non-resident students, only surpassed by Massachusetts and New York. The 22.8% in Kentucky is more than six percentage points higher than the national average of 16.4%.
