PNPI Explorer Blog – Florida
Welcome back to the PNPI Explorer blog series, where we examine higher education data in different states. This week’s spotlight is on Florida.
In 2021 in Florida, there were 171 institutions serving 704,356 full-time equivalent (FTE) students. By looking at the Explorer’s Enrollment & Access report, we see that nearly half of the undergraduate students at Florida institutions received a federal Pell Grant (43.6%). Further, the report provides a breakdown of Pell Grant recipients by institutional sector, with 66.2% of for-profit, 47.5% of private non-profit, 43.9% of public two-year, and 37.7% of public four-year undergraduates receiving a Pell Grant.
We can further explore the distribution of Pell Grants at Florida institutions by seeing how the share of recipients has changed over time compared to the national average using the Explorer’s Trend Explorer. The trends show that Florida has consistently enrolled a higher share of Pell Grant recipients than the national average, though this gap has narrowed in recent years. In 2011, the share of Pell Grant recipients in Florida was 12.5 percentage points higher than the national average, while in 2021 the difference was only 8.5 percentage points. Florida also follows the national trend of declining shares of Pell Grant recipients, dropping by 15.6 percentage points in the past decade.
