PNPI Explorer Blog – Alaska

22 January 2024 In Explorer Blog

Welcome back to the PNPI Explorer blog series, where we examine higher education data in different states. This week’s spotlight is on Alaska.

In 2021 in Alaska, there were eight institutions of higher education serving 13,311 full-time equivalent (FTE) students. Looking at the Explorer’s Enrollment & Access report, we see that across all four institutional sectors (for-profit, non-profit, public two-year, and public four-year), only public four-year institutions enroll a higher share of traditionally aged FTE students (under 25) compared to post-traditional students.

For-profit institutions in Alaska have the highest share of post-traditional students (62.5%) followed by non-profit institutions (53.3%). Given that post-traditional students are much more likely to enroll part-time, it is remarkable that Alaska institutions enroll such high shares of FTE post-traditional students across all sectors. We can further examine how well Alaska is serving this population by turning to our Comparison Tool.

Across all institutions, nearly half (43.2%) of Alaska’s FTE enrollment were post-traditional students. This is nearly double that of the national estimate of 24.6%. The state with the second largest share of post-traditional students, New Mexico (33.3%), is nearly 10 percentage points lower than Alaska. All state figures can be determined by hovering over the state in question on the PNPI Explorer.
