College Board: Trends in College Pricing and Student Aid 2021

The College Board recently published their annual Trends in College Pricing and Student Aid 2021 report which provides updates on college pricing and student aid that is available to help students and their families pay for college.  Among the findings related to pricing:

  • Public two-year in-district average (sticker) tuition and fees is $3,800, $50 higher than in 2020-21 and a 1.3% increase before adjusting for inflation. 
  • Public four-year in-state average (sticker) tuition and fees is $10,740, $170 higher than in 2020-21 and a 1.6% increase before adjusting for inflation.
  • Public four-year out-of-state average (sticker) tuition and fees is  $27,560, $410 higher than in 2020-21 and a 1.5% increase before adjusting for inflation.
  • Private nonprofit four-year average (sticker) tuition and fees is $38,070, $800 higher than in 2020-21 and a 2.1% increase before adjusting for inflation.
  • In the last 30 years (between 1991-92 and 2021-22), the average published tuition and fees increased across all school types (after adjusting for inflation):
    •  from $2,310 to $3,800 at public two-year institutions
    • from  $4,160 to $10,740 at public four-year institutions 
    •  from $19,360 to $38,070 at private nonprofit four-year institutions 
  • In 2021-22, the average estimated budgets (including tuition and fees, room and board, and allowances for books and supplies, transportation and other personal expenses) for full-time undergraduate students differed by school type.
    • $18,830 for public two-year in-district students 
    • $27,330 for public four-year in-state students 
    • $44,150 for public four-year out-of-state students 
    • $55,800 for private nonprofit four-year students
  • Since 2009-10, first-time full-time undergraduate students at public two-year colleges have been receiving enough grant aid on average to cover their tuition and fees. 
  • In 2021-2022, the average net tuition and fee price (what first-time full-time in-state undergraduate students actually paid) for public four year and private non-profit four year institutions was the lowest it’s been since 2006-2007.
    • $2,640 is the average net tuition fee price for public four year institutions in 2021-22, compared to $3,370 in 2006-07.  
    • $14,990 is the net tuition and fee price for private nonprofit four-year institutions in 2021-22, compared to $16, 640 in 2006-07.
