PNPI Explorer Blog – Virginia
Welcome back to the PNPI Explorer blog series, where we examine higher education data in different states. This week’s spotlight is on Virginia.
In 2022 in Virginia, there were 98 institutions serving 333,030 full-time equivalent (FTE) students. Using the Comparison Tool, we can examine the educational attainment reported in the U.S. Census for Virginia residents. The Census reported that 18.60% of Virginians have attained a graduate degree. This is the fifth-highest percentage of all states and is more than 4.5 percentage points above the national average of 14.05%.
The high percentage of residents with graduate degrees has been consistent throughout recent history. Virginians consistently outpaced the national average by around four percentage points in every year between 2012 and 2022. As the national average continues to climb, Virginia has climbed at a similar rate.
