PNPI Explorer Blog – Michigan
Welcome back to the PNPI Explorer blog series, where we examine higher education data in different states. This week’s spotlight is on Michigan.
In 2021 in Michigan, there were 88 institutions serving 362,105 full-time equivalent (FTE) students. Using the College Cost report, we can see that the average net price by family income varies across institution types, but is consistently lowest for families making less than $30,000.
Using the Comparison Tool, we can see that the average net price for students with household incomes less than $30,000 in Michigan is lower than the national average of $10,730. In fact, we can see that Michigan has a lower net cost for these families than every state in the nation other than Mississippi and Wyoming. Michigan’s cost of $8,500 is one third the cost for similar families in the District of Columbia, where families in this income category pay an average net price of $25,960.
