PNPI Explorer Blog – Indiana
Welcome back to the PNPI Explorer blog series, where we examine higher education data in different states. This week’s spotlight is on Indiana.
In 2021 in Indiana, there were 60 institutions serving 282,869 full-time equivalent (FTE) students. Using the Explorer’s College Cost report, we can see what Indiana institutions charged tuition and fees for in-state and out-of-state students. Indiana has a considerable discrepancy between average in-state tuition and fees ($16K) compared to average out-of-state tuition and fees ($28.5K). This discrepancy could be driven by Indiana’s strong public university systems, such as Indiana University and Purdue University, that have large regional campuses while maintaining selective flagship campuses that are attractive to out-of-state students.
Using the Comparison Tool, we can examine whether the difference between in-state and out-of-state tuition and fees in Indiana is reflective of national trends. Looking at a state-by-state comparison of in-state tuition, we see that Indiana falls almost exactly on the national average line.
Looking at a report on out-of-state tuition and fees, however, Indiana falls nearly $5K higher than the national average ($24.7K), making it the ninth most expensive state for out-of-state students on average at $28.5K.
