Federal Student Aid Boot Camp for Prospective Policymakers

PNPI’s Federal Student Aid (FSA) Boot Camp is designed to prepare participants to join the ranks of higher education policymakers on Capitol Hill, in federal agencies and in national associations and think tanks. The event will provide individuals with a firm knowledge base on which to create and consider policy options over the course of their careers and offer an opportunity to network with current education policy professionals in Washington, D.C.
Participation in PNPI’s FSA Boot Camp will be particularly useful for public policy or education students, new association staff, up and coming think tank staff, other nonprofit personnel and/or current professionals considering a career change. Scholarships are available for up to 5 undergraduate upperclassmen (rising seniors or graduated seniors) or graduate students to attend.
Participants can expect to:
- Increase their understanding of how federal student aid programs work and who they serve;
- Gain a working knowledge of how the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) works and how it might be improved;
- Increase their understanding of the impact federal student aid has had on college access and student outcomes;
- Learn about student loan borrowing patterns and student loan default;
- Deepen their understanding of federal student aid repayment programs; and,
- Increase their knowledge of how federal student aid is paid for and the impact of annual budgetary changes.
Additionally, participants will have the opportunity to benefit from two networking sessions with policy professionals from the federal government and prominent think tanks and advocacy groups. Participants will be provided with a briefing book filled with topic relevant resources and readings prior to the event, will be given access to all speaker presentations, materials and contact information post-event, and will receive biennial PNPI newsletters.

To ensure a rich learning experience and to maximize the potential for participants to build a meaningful career network, the seminar has been designed to accommodate up to 30 individuals.
Student Rate: $99 (must email copy of student ID to verify student status)
Early Bird Special: Register by June 10th at $225
Register by July 8th: $250
Registration fee includes meals (as outlined in tentative agenda above), conference materials and a briefing book that will be delivered to all participants prior to the seminar.
Accommodations: a block of rooms has been reserved at Hotel George (the conference hotel) for the nights of August 3rd and 4th at a discounted rate.
